Use Treats
Maybe this one is a no-brainer, but animals love food and won’t take their eyes off a treat if it's in front of them. Use that to your advantage and hold the snacks next to the lens or wherever you want them to be looking.
Use Props
Put your puppy in a bowl or your hamster in a tube. Props help pose the animal and give the photo a sense of action and variety. Plus, having a toy just might make them sit still for the length of a shutter click.
Dress Up
Don’t roll your eyes, there’s nothing cuter than an animal in a costume and you know it. You don’t need to go to any extremes here, just put your glasses on your dog or have your cat wear a bow tie. It’s never not going to be cute.
Use Natural Light
This isn’t just for pets either. Natural light is always going to be better for photos than a camera flash. So turn off the flash and open a window. Don’t go too crazy though, full sunlight can be just as difficult as a flash.
Get In There Yourself
Your pet is yours, so photos are going to be more interesting if you are in them, too. It highlights the family aspect of having a pet even if your face isn’t shown.
